Where regular food falls short
Nevertheless, the story isn't quite complete. There are four instances where regular food becomes more challenging. Firstly, at high intensity: when you're pushing hard, breathing heavily, and bouncing, chewing something solid is difficult, and liquid or a soft bar is better. Secondly, the ratio: the 2:1 mix of glucose and fructose you need above 60 grams per hour is not guaranteed in random fruit or candy. Thirdly, logistics: hundreds of grams of carbohydrates from bananas and bread quickly fill your back pockets. And fourthly, fiber: many regular foods are full of it, which can cause stomach upset during exercise.
