Eagle Performance Index v4

How we build this datasheet.

No marketing. No filters. A transparent scoring system based on 11 scientifically proven parameters. Here's how we do it.

1. What we measure

Every sports energy bar or energy chew listed in the Performance Index is evaluated against 11 parameters. Each parameter has a fixed weighting and contributes a defined number of points, up to a maximum score of 100.

Every bar starts with a score of 45.

The baseline score of 45 is not an arbitrary value but a calibrated starting point: a product that meets the minimal expectations of a sports energy bar (sugar as fuel, edible during exercise) automatically receives 45 points. Points are then earned through specific quality markers (CHO density, sugar type, fruit pulp, allergen-free, caffeine or sodium profile) and can be deducted by penalties (too much fat, too large a portion, unsubstantiated claims). A product can therefore also drop below 45. The maximum score is 100.

Parameter Max points Why it's important
Baseline +45 Everyone starts on equal footing. Points are earned through specific quality markers and can be withheld due to penalties.
CHO density /100g +8 How much fuel per gram of product. Important for effort-fueling without stomach fullness.
Sugar type +6 Multi-source mix (fructose + glucose + fruit sugar) wins over mono-source maltodextrin.
Allergen-free +6 Vegan + gluten-free + lactose-free = 2 points per verified claim.
Fruit% +5 Higher fruit% means polyphenols, fiber, and natural sugar mix included for free.
Caffeine /g (BOOST) +8 Mg caffeine per gram of product. Eagle BOOST provides 2.0 mg/g, top density in category.
Sodium (ENDURANCE) +8 For exercise >90 min: higher sodium per serving is rewarded.

Penalties (negative points)

  • Fat ≥15g/100g: -5 points. Lipids slow gastric emptying during exercise.
  • Fat 10-15g/100g: -3 points.
  • Soy, gluten, milk, peanut: -1 to -2 points each. Narrow target group, friction in choice.
  • Portion ≥60g: -3 points. Above 60g, the bar cannot be comfortably eaten in one go during effort and the portion must be split. This is a practical disadvantage for on-the-bike or in-race use, not a quality judgment about the product itself. Portion sizes under 60g do not incur a penalty, regardless of whether they are 25g or 45g — both forms suit different athletes and use cases.
  • Hydrogel claim (Maurten): -1.5 points. McCubbin 2020 and Baur 2019 (RCTs) showed no performance advantage of hydrogel over regular CHO.

2. How we score

The score is calculated as the sum of baseline + all points gained - all penalties. Maximum 100, minimum 0. The formula is public and reproducible.

score = 45 (baseline)
+ CHO density bonus (0 to +8)
+ Sugar type bonus (0 to +6)
+ Allergen-free bonus (0 to +6)
+ Fruit% bonus (0 to +5)
+ Caffeine/g bonus, BOOST category (0 to +8)
+ Sodium bonus, ENDURANCE category (0 to +8)
- Fat penalty (0 to -5)
- Allergen penalty (0 to -6)
- Portion size penalty (0 to -3)
- Hydrogel claim penalty (0 to -1.5)

Tier classification

Tier Score range Meaning
Tier 1 85 - 100 Best-in-class. Excellent fuel + clean label + functionally substantiated.
Tier 2 70 - 84 Top performer. Suitable for competitive exertion.
Tier 3 55 - 69 Recreational. Works, but lacks one or more Tier 1 markers.
Tier 4 0 - 54 Not optimized for sport. Often snack positioning.

3. Ranking by importance per category

The weightings are not evenly distributed across the three categories. For each use case, the scientifically most decisive parameter has been weighted more heavily. This is based on current peer-reviewed literature (see section 5).

STANDARD
1. CHO density (% CHO per 100g)

Primary: fuel density. Then: sugar type (multi-source), fruit base, allergen profile, fat content. Source: Jeukendrup 2010 ACSM, Burke 2011.

BOOST
1. Caffeine density (mg/g)

Primary: mg caffeine per gram of product. Then: CHO density, sugar type, allergen profile. Source: Spriet 2014, Guest 2021 ISSN position stand.

ENDURANCE
1. Electrolytes (Na, Cl, NO, Mg)

Primary: sodium + chloride + nitrate + magnesium. Then: CHO density, glucose:fructose ratio, endurance-specific ingredients. Source: Veniamakis 2022, Viribay 2020.

The primary parameter yields the highest available points value (+8) in each category. Secondary parameters yield +5 to +6. A product that scores high on the primary parameter but is weak on secondary parameters may still achieve a lower overall score than a broadly performing combination.

4. Sources and verification

All data comes from the official manufacturer page of each product. We do not conduct our own lab tests. For each product, we record:

  • The direct source URL (manufacturer website or official webshop)
  • A Wayback Machine snapshot (so data remains verifiable even if specs change)
  • The date of collection

Verification status

Each product receives one of three labels:

  • Verified: manufacturer data directly imported or confirmed via Wayback snapshot.
  • To be verified: data available but not yet corroborated via snapshot.
  • Conflict: two sources provide conflicting figures. Both figures are in the notes.

Update frequency. Full revalidation of the Performance Index occurs annually (once a year). Interim corrections are only implemented upon notification of a production error, a new product launch affecting the top 5, or a significant recipe change.

5. Scientific substantiation

The weightings in the scoring system are not arbitrary. Each parameter is supported by peer-reviewed research (evidence grade A where possible). Below are the main sources, clickable to the original study.

6. What we don't do

  • No taste or texture evaluation. Subjective, not measurable, not comparable.
  • No medical or performance claims for competitors.
  • No sponsorship correction. Eagle is in the tables by the exact same rules as all other brands.
  • No hidden filters. The complete dataset is accessible via our Airtable reference.

7. Why Eagle tops the list

Eagle does not win through hidden bonus points or arbitrary weightings. Eagle wins because its composition achieves a top-tier score across multiple parameters simultaneously and avoids penalties:

  • 80g CHO/100g: max CHO density bonus.
  • Fruit sugar + glucose + fructose: multi-source mix bonus.
  • Vegan + gluten-free + lactose-free: full allergen bonus.
  • 50% fruit pulp: verifiable on the label, not just claimed.
  • 2.0 mg caffeine/g (BOOST): top caffeine density in BE segment.
  • Low fat: no fat penalty.
  • 25g portion: no portion size penalty.

The difference is not in one parameter. It's in the combination. Other brands excel in one dimension and fail in another. Eagle consistently scores at the top across all dimensions.

8. Context and individual differences

The Performance Index is based on average scientific evidence for the average healthy athlete. What is optimal for a professional athlete on a multi-day stage race is not the same as what is optimal for an amateur on a 60-minute ride.

Use case determines the advice. Pro athletes train gut tolerance up to 90-120g CHO per hour and also absorb high salt loads. Recreational athletes often benefit from 30-60g CHO/h and lower sodium dosages to avoid GI issues.

A product that scores high in the Performance Index is not automatically the right product for every athlete, every training, or every race day. Always test your nutrition in training conditions before race day.

Variables that influence individual optimal choice, and which this index does not uniquely color per user:

  • Training level and gut tolerance
  • Duration and intensity of exertion
  • Ambient temperature and hydration strategy
  • Personal allergies, intolerances, or medication
  • Preference for solid food, gel or drink
